Letchworth State Park
The Park is 35 miles south of Rochester, NY.  It's a carry-in/carry-out park which means that everything you bring in must be taken out with you (except if you camp, there are dumpsters and recycle bins).  In the summer, there is the gorge to see, hiking, swimming, white water (Class II-III), hot air ballooning, horseback riding.  In the winter you can cross-country ski, snowshoe, skate, snow tube, snowmobile, and hike.  A kewl place for sure!

There is also a museum, a restored Seneca Indian Council House, the grave of Mary Jemison, and Mary's cabin in which she lived (pics of these coming later).  There are three waterfalls (the highest falls, the Upper Falls, can be seen below) as well!  If you don't like roughing it camping, there are also cabins to rent as well as some lodges.  There is an Inn, and several snack bars, and plenty of bathrooms located throughout the park.  There are plenty of small, quaint towns around the Park if you like such things.

Now for some pictures........ (Give the pics time to load - it's worth it!)

You can see the top of the canyon over the corn fields.

This is the far side of Mt. Morris Dam to give you perspective see the car next to the tower then go on down to the next picture.

This is the upstream side of the dam - see the tower on the right, where the car is.  The reason there is no water above the dam is that it is only used for flood control, not to make an artificial lake.

Here's a pic of a black vulture flying around the dam.  There were a bunch of them.  I got lucky and caught this one with the camera.

The canyon at big bend -- the gray spot on the right is a woman for perspective.

There lots of kewl stonework made by the men in CCC camps during the Depression.

Stone steps leading to an overlook - more CCC work.

Stone bridge behind Wolf Creek - Cars travel on the road through the center of the park for 20 miles - it's a wonderful drive.

This is the upper falls.  If you look at the bridge abutments, there are two people standing on the left one.

This is the railroad bridge that is still used above the upper falls.  Note the people standing on the bridge above the right hand scaffolding.

Here's a shot of the falls and the bridge.

There was a pavilion at one of the overlooks.  It had a nifty CCC made fireplace.  I liked the way the light came through the windows and between the boards.

Here's the family from left to right (don't know who the people are walking to the left), Gramp, Stef, Betsie, Barb, Katie, and Bob (Chris was AWOL).
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah I know they put the fence in so people would stay on the road side! So, sue me!!
